Yesterday Evangelist Sandridge, at our church, spoke from Galatians 5:1-7 and I’ll be honest and say that I really didn’t read the scripture like I should have then but it caught my attention this morning. (The Holy Spirit, I tell ya!) Galatians 5:1 says, “Christ has set us free to live a free life. So take your stand! Never again let anyone put a harness of slavery on you.” Now, before you start thinking this is only for blacks or that I mean slavery in terms of what happened in the past, I’m not because slavery didn’t stop there. However, I am speaking on the terms of anything that has you bound or dominates your life. See, this particular passage is actually speaking on the act of circumcision and how if the people then accepted it they were giving up the advantages of the free life that God had already allowed for them. However, I’m speaking of the now, when you choose to do things your way, live your way, forget the commandments of God, lie when the truth will do, hate when love feels better or hurt when a hug will be sufficient because when you do these things you’re giving up the blessings that God has for you. Oh, stop blaming others because Galatians 5:7-8 says, “You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you.” Just because someone is doing it doesn’t mean you have too. Stop being bound by things that you should have released a long time ago. Let go of those drugs that keep you acting stupid. Let go of that alcohol that makes you look stupid. Let go of that man or woman who keeps treating you like you’re nothing even though you’re the child of a King. If there is anything that is dominating your life that keeps you out of the will of God, then you’re in slavery to it. You do know that you’re free, right? Romans 8:14-17 says, “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.”
Yea, Jesus suffered when He was beaten all night long, drug from each judgment hall, made to wear a crown of thorns, carry his own cross, spit on, cursed at, hung between criminals although he had committed no crime, nailed in his hands although they healed, nailed in His feet even after the many miles he traveled healing and restoring and buried in somebody else’s grave even though His Father was the Almighty. Yet after His suffering, after His death and after His burial; He was raised from that dusty grave and received all that His father had promised Him. Why, because He shared the suffering. Stop being in slavery to stuff that takes you out of God’s will. You’re free because you’ve been set free so stop putting the chains back on. Yes, there will be some suffering on this side but that’s to make you appreciate the glory!
